Dinosaur remains such as teeth and bones are the most familiar fossils, which are called body fossils; as for the remains of dinosaurs (including footprints, nests, feces or foraging traces), it is also possible to form fossils and preserve them, which are called body fossils. The body shape and life form of dinosaurs can be restored and inferred from the discovered fossils, but the color of the dinosaur's skin cannot be found on the basis of fossils, so it can only be inferred based on the knowledge of existing animals. According to paleontologists, large dinosaurs may have markings or spots as protective colors, and the colors will be more vivid. During mating, parts of the head and skin of male dinosaurs may have shown bright colors like modern birds, making it easier to attract the favor of the opposite sex.

The dinosaurs that can be seen in museums are actually only a small part of the fossil inventory. For example, the Geoscience Museum at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, houses nearly 100 tons of fossils that have not yet been stripped of their gypsum shells. Many museum basement shelves or drawers are crammed with labeled fossilized dinosaur bones, most of which sit untouched for years, waiting to be studied by scientists.
